About

Partha Majumder has made significant contributions to human-, statistical- and population genetics and genomics. He has developed methodologies for mapping human disease genes, identified genomic factors underlying many diseases notably oral cancer, and has reconstructed the ancestries and relationships of various endogamous population groups of India and Asia using genomic methods and tools. He has immensely contributed to capacity-building in human and statistical genetics in India. He has founded the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, a Government of India institution. He has provided leadership, and continues to do so, to several large research national and international consortia projects on human genetics and genomics. The media has given him the moniker “Gene Guru.”

He is an elected Fellow of all the three science academies of India, of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (WAST), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the International Statistical Institute. He is has served as the President of the Indian Academy of Sciences and of WAST.

He has been awarded the G.N. Ramachandran Gold Medal (2021) by the CSIR; Barclay Memorial Medal (2020) by The Asiatic Society; Sir P.C. Ray Memorial Medal (2020) by the University of Calcutta; Golden Jubilee Commemoration Medal (2018) by the Indian National Science Academy; Centenary Medal of Excellence (2014) by the School of Tropical Medicine; Biology Prize (2009) of The World Academy of Sciences, Trieste; G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research (2002) by the K.K. He obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. He did his post-doctoral research at the Center for Demographic & Population Genetics, University of Texas Medical Center, Houston. He has served for two years, 1987-1989, as visiting assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh before returning home and joining his alma mater ISI's Anthropology and Human Genetics Unit. Later he founded two institutes – one in Kolkata, Center for Population Genomics and second one in Kalyani, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics.
